El plástico y Nuestra Selva

Leticia,Amazonas, Colombia

"El plástico y Nuestra Selva" in Spanish means "Plastic and our Jungle" - a trash art exhibition presented at the Banco de la Republica ethnographic museum in Leticia, Colombia and a result of an amazing collaboration and workshop I led with Fundacion Entropika and La Aljaba Foundation, programme and home for children in extreme poverty. The aim of this project was to give local children from various backgrounds, indigenous and non-indigenous a hands on experience with plastic waste, learning about its impacts on wildlife, nature, our health and specifically the Amazon's ecosystem and biodiversity.

The multi-day workshop took place in Leticia in the Colombian Amazon and at the Aljaba Children's Home, with 70 participants between the ages of 9 and 18. Together with the students, we conducted a cleanup in the area surrounding the children's home, bordering the forest, followed by a survey where we classified the items to identify the main types of waste and found that 96% of items were made of plastic and the most common items were snack and candy packaging. We classified and cleaned the plastic and then transformed them into works of art representing the region's fauna. The process was conducted without consuming more plastic and without the use of materials like glue and paint. The work was the result of the collection of 25kg of rubbish; the most common item found being sweet wrappers (!), followed by bottles, plastic bags, hard plastics, and disposable cups.

The artworks were photographed and framed in reused old frames from the museum! The children from La Aljaba came to see their 17 artworks, took a tour of the museum, and learned about medicinal plants and cultural traditions from the Amazon. These artsy kids did a fantastic job, got to present their art, and learned about the plastic crisis. We can all reduce our plastic behaviour and exposure with small steps and raise awareness in creative ways!

The exhibition presents the message of plastic contamination in the Amazon, and its impact on biodiversity and ecosystem health. Plastic threatens biodiversity not only in our oceans but in our tropical rainforests, including the greatest of all: The Amazon

La Aljaba Foundation is an institution for children in situations of extreme need in the Amazon. They have more than 20 years helping vulnerable families, bringing hope and opportunities into their lives.

Fundacion Entropika is a local organisation in Leticia which works in the conservation of wild animals, and improving quality of life in communities on the Colombian–Peruvian border, using monkeys as a flagship species for the conservation of ecosystems.
